EMF is an English alternative rock and dance-rock band formed in 1989 in Cinderford, Gloucestershire. Blending guitar-driven indie rock with elements of sampling, hip-hop beats, and electronic dance music, the group quickly rose to international fame with their breakout 1990 single Unbelievable, which topped the Billboard Hot 100 and became one of the defining alternative hits of the early ’90s. Their debut album Schubert Dip followed the same year and cemented their place in the wave of UK bands bridging indie rock and club culture.
The band’s classic lineup consists of vocalist James Atkin, guitarists Ian Dench and Derry Brownson, bassist Zac Foley, and drummer Mark Decloedt. Known for their infectious hooks and irreverent attitude, EMF scored additional UK hits with songs like I Believe and Lies, and continued releasing music through the early 1990s before disbanding in 1995. The band reunited in the 2000s and has remained active, performing live and releasing new material while maintaining their legacy as one of the most recognizable crossover acts from the alternative dance boom of the early ’90s.
