Today we’d like to introduce you to LaKebra “DJ Keebee” Clark.
LaKebra, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
At the young age of eight, I started performing in countless plays held at Baltimore’s Arena Players, Incorporated, which led to my love and affection for music. I began DJing at the age of 14. My neighbor Dj Lil Mic was and still is a DJ. He would allow me to mess around on the turntables; back then, it was actual vinyl, with no advanced technology yet. We are talking 1994. Even before then, I would make my own mixtapes in my room recording over tapes.
I was known around the neighborhood as Lil Keebee the dancer. I didn’t take it seriously I would just play around but never could shake it. I think back then. Parents would drill you about a plan b for career sake. People sometimes cast their fears on you inadvertently. Especially when it comes to Entertainment and Art’s. They always say, what’s your backup plan. I became a professional in 2018. I left my teaching career at Baltimore City Public Schools to go full-time in 2019.
I received my big break when I was asked to DJ for The Steve & Marjorie Harvey Foundation in Atlanta, Georgia.
From there it has been up. Some of the events that I have djied include; but are not limited to, CIAA weekend, DJ for the Bygone and Blk Swan, Baltimore Preakness, Baltimore Afram, 300 Entertainment Stage, along with hosting First Wednesday for the second year in a row, and oh so much more.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Yes, it has been so far! I feel blessed that my transition from being the life of the party to controlling the party has been smooth.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
They call me “The Blend Princess,” A female Dj born and raised in Baltimore. I specialize in blends, known to most as the dancing Dj. I get off the turntables and dance in the crowd. I’m most proud that I’m living a dream and was able to do a whole career change at 38 and sustain throughout a pandemic and truly achieve pure happiness.
What’s next?
My plan for the future is to become an internationally known DJ. I want to DJ all around the world. I want to be internationally known on the 1(s) and 2(s).
